Pandemic 2020

March 2020 brought a Coronavirus to the world and it is really a scary one. It emerged from China and now spreads across all the continents.

  • It caused a lot of casualties and hundreds of thousands were infected.
  • W.H.O declares it as a pandemic.

On one hand the world is fighting for health and on the other hand as one community we have to keep the nations and individuals financially strong enough so that they can hold their future. Pandemic will be over soon and till that the nations should have to take decisions to hold up their economies. Whole world is worried about the current situation but there are few who have been much more worried than others.

coronavirus aid

Who must be more worried?

Freelancers or self-employed people across the globe contribute a lot to the nation’s economy. Freelance market is one of the major sources that bring money and value to a nation. At this time, when there exists a pandemic in the world and we are fighting for health and to heal the world and wipe out the virus, there are a lot of things that are getting affected.

“Unable for small businesses to manage day to day financial activities”
Small businesses are unable to manage their day to day finance because of the lock downs and the unavailability of the resources. Freelance market is going down, causing tough time for the self-employed freelancers to stand back on their feet. World seems to have a shortage of supplies and daily products and among them the hand sanitizers and surgical masks are the most prominent.

Coronavirus aid: How to help?

At this state of Pandemic, how can we cope with all the degradations we are facing? The few important products which are not available in the market due to several reasons including the stockers who have stocked the products to push the prices for their personal benefit or may be the low availability of the raw material or resources to the manufacturer to keep developing the products.

Small businesses which are already in the market need to be stabilized and it’s a good opportunity to start a new business that offers the products which are short in the market. Small businesses can cover a low range of market but indeed in the presence of hundreds of such temporary startups can offer a very helpful hand to the public.

However, the issue is of finance and budgeting because due to the Coronavirus concern, the small businesses already in need of financial aid to make themselves survive for a little longer. In such a situation, new startups and the existing ones can only be stabilized when there is financial aid that helps their business activities during the Pandemic.

Leading the world, Germany has taken the initiative to grant aid for freelancers and small business owners. This indeed is a very good step at a very right time. Their aid policy stated that if a small business owner needs financial aid to keep continuing with the business he or she can ask for the aid. At any point the aid receiver is found not eligible for the financial aid, that whole amount will be converted as the loan which the owner should give back to the state.

German Government Grant

The European Commission (EC) authorized on Sunday the plans of the German Government to provide liquidity to its companies through state-subsidized loans to deal with the coronavirus, measures that have been approved thanks to the relaxation of State Coronavirus aid rules.

“The Commission concluded that the measures are necessary, appropriate and proportional to remedy a serious disturbance in the economy of a member state,” the community executive said in a statement, stressing that they are in line with the temporary measures adopted to facilitate the granting of State support.

KfW Bankengruppe (banking group): Coronavirus aid

Specifically, Germany has received authorization for two credit-granting programs through its national promotion bank KfW.

  • The first will allow the public bank to cover up to 90% of the risks of loans to companies of any size that have a maturity of up to five years and do not exceed 1,000 million euros per company.
  • The second will allow KfW and private banks to provide loans through a consortium in which the State will cover up to 80% of the risk of a specific loan, but not more than 50% of the company’s total debt.

The EC approves public aid from Germany to its companies due to the pandemic

Berlin plans to give up to half a trillion euros in liquidity with these measures, according to the German government when announcing the package a few days ago.

“These measures will allow KfW to provide liquidity in the form of subsidized loans to companies affected by the coronavirus outbreak. This will be done in close cooperation with commercial banks,” the Commission explained.
The Community Executive has given the green light considering that the measures are in line with the Temporary Framework for State Aid launched in the wake of the pandemic since the loans will only cover liquidity needs in the near future, they will only be granted until later this year and will be limited to a maximum of six years in duration.

According to Brussels, KfW agreements with commercial banks will ensure that the benefits they receive through these subsidized loans are effectively passed on to companies.

The European Union adopted this Temporary Framework on March 19, which will allow States, in an exceptional way, to channel aid in the form of fiscal advantages, guarantees and public loans to companies, and support for banks to face the economic impact of the coronavirus.

This system, which was already used in 2009 during the financial crisis, allows Brussels to authorize public aid that under normal circumstances would not be accepted as long as it is “intended to remedy a serious disturbance in the economy of a Member State”.

Tax Advisor Answers Questions About Soforthilfe II

This article originally published in German at Gruender Lexikon site,  FAQs with Tax Advisor which has translated into English by Dr. Carol van Buren. According to her lots of people have questions and concerns about the self-employed grants. I think it is important that people understand exactly what they are for and what may happen if you fraudulently claim them or use them incorrectly.

What are the requirements to apply for Soforthilfe?

First of all, a distinction must be made between emergency aid from the federal government and emergency aid from the federal states. The distinction is sometimes not easy because federal funds are also distributed through the federal states or the programs are combined.

Eligible applicants for federal funds are self-employed, freelancers and small businesses. They must carry out their work from within Germany and be registered with a German tax office. In addition, companies must have existed for a long time and should not have been in financial difficulty before the corona crisis.

The state funds are often similar, but can also differ. The requirements in the respective federal state must be checked separately. However, this can also be difficult at the moment, because a lot is still unclear due to the rapid implementation of the aid programs. Incidentally, this also applies to federal funds and of course influences all of my answers.

Can I apply for Soforthilfe II if I am still liquid, but am increasingly losing my orders?

This is still somewhat unclear at the moment. However, according to the information currently available from the federal government, it is to be assumed that a business must already be experiencing liquidity problems (Liquiditätsengpass) at the time the application is made. The applicant must confirm that the corona pandemic has caused them economic difficulties. Although funds will be transferred quickly one should expect that this information will be checked at a later date (my emphasis).

How do I calculate how much my business has been affected and how can I prove it?

This is also difficult to say at the moment because it is not known what will be accepted as evidence. When applying, the only thing that needs to be assured is that a liquidity shortage (Liquiditätsengpass) has occurred. However, it can be assumed that the real figures of the company and its evaluations can be used at a later point in time to check exactly what the situation was at the time the application was made. In addition, bank statements, cash receipts and proof of current obligations, such as loan, leasing or rental contracts, can be used.

To work out whether you do, in fact, have a liquidity bottleneck (Liquiditätsengpass), you should take into consideration what operating liquid funds and, if applicable, any expected funds you have available and then subtract your existing expenses, e.g. rent/lease for your business premises, loan repayments, equipment leasing costs etc but also charges for insurance and tax consultants. If this results in a negative amount, there is a liquidity bottleneck (Liquiditätsengpass).

Am I entitled to Soforthilfe even if I am “only” part-time self-employed (nebenberuflich)?

No, Soforthilfe II is only available for people who are full time freelancers or self-employed. This means that employed people with a side job are ineligible to apply.

Do I have to use up my personal wealth before I can apply for a grant?

This is also not entirely clear at the moment. The overwhelming opinion assumes that this is not the case. It is financial support for your business. It is not financial support for your living costs (i.e welfare). Long-term pensions, shares, real estate or funds that are needed for a living are not included.

Can I use the grant as a solo self-employed person or freelancer to pay for private costs such as rent and groceries?

A very much discussed point, which is probably still not completely clear. However, it is becoming increasingly accepted that this is probably not the case. For instance, on Friday the investment bank in Schleswig-Holstein, which issued the funds, said that private maintenance costs are also included in the emergency aid. The bank has since retracted this statement.

If freelancers, solopreneurs and/or small business owners are also experiencing financial hardship (Liquiditätsengpass) in their private lives, basic social security (Grundsicherung) is supposed to take care of this. The application procedure for claiming ALG II has been relaxed accordingly.

How do I calculate my living expenses? Can I set a flat rate?

As already mentioned above, in most cases living costs are not covered by Soforthilfe II.

N.B. If you have already received Berlin Soforthilfe II, it can be used to cover your living expenses. However, from next week (6 April) Federal rules will apply. This means you can only use the funds for your business. They have changed the FAQs to reflect this change. Attached is proof of the old rules, should there be issues later.

Can I apply for both federal and state grants?

Yes, both federal and state grants can be applied for. These are usually granted side by side. Here again the special state law and also the de-minimis regulations have to be considered.

What does de-minimis mean and what do I have to consider?

De-minimis is a funding term. It means that if you apply for several grants (e.g. from the EU, from the government, from your state etc), the total combined sum of those grants must not exceed a certain amount.

In order to simplify the examination of this de-minimis regulation, a so-called de-minimis declaration must be submitted when applying for Soforthilfe. This statement must list all de-minimis aid that an entrepreneur has received over a period of time, usually the past three years.

The declaration should be made in full. Because here too the following applies: Incorrect or incomplete information can be considered subsidy fraud.

Do grants have to be repaid?

If you received the Federal Soforthilfe II grant lawfully, you do not have to repay it. Different regulations apply to state grants. However, those who have received the grants unjustly must expect a demand for recovery. Anyone who receives the funds on the basis of incorrect information (fraud) should expect to also face criminal consequences.

Do I have to pay back subsidies if I go bankrupt within the next few weeks despite the emergency aid?

No, this is also not to be expected. Unless the funds were wrongly paid out. In this case, too, a demand to recover the funds can be expected.

Do the grants paid count towards business income?

Yes, the subsidy is recorded as business income and is taxed as such.
Are the grants tax-free and/or are they subject to Progressionsvorbehalt (i.e. will they move me into a higher tax bracket)?

The grants are neither tax-free nor subject to the progression clause. This is because the subsidy is generally taxable as business income. However, this will only take effect when the tax return for 2020 has to be submitted. So, next year at the earliest. (my emphasis) Only if a positive profit was generated in 2020 will the personal tax rate be influenced by the subsidy.

Can the funds run out before the application is made?

That is hard to say. Funding can always run out before everyone has submitted their application. However, the federal funding program in particular is very generously financed, which means that it is unlikely to run out of money for the time being.

Politicians are also keen to ensure that everyone who legitimately applies for funding will also receive it. The same applies to state subsidies but, of course, it cannot be entirely ruled out.

What happens if I wrongly applied for and received the grants?

As already indicated above, the funds that have been wrongly allocated can be reclaimed. If this is all that happens, you may consider yourself lucky. However, be warned – especially if the information you provided was incorrect – you should also expect to be prosecuted. I am not a lawyer, but you may face criminal proceedings for subsidy fraud or making a false oath/perjury. These are not trivial offenses. Subsidy fraud in particularly serious cases can result in imprisonment of up to ten years. If the offense is considered less serious, there are prison terms of up to six months or fines.

From next week though the rules in Berlin will also change. They are going to COMBINE the grant with the federal grant – or maybe just offer the federal grant – because they have used all the money they had for freelancers. When it becomes just the federal grant, you will not be allowed to use it for personal expenses. You will need to apply for ALG II instead.

If you are an individual who is looking for ways to work in Germany, we have news for you. Germany recently introduced the German Skilled Immigration Act that not only changes things for the better but entirely changes how they carry out procedures in the country in terms of immigrants.

Brought in practice on 2nd March 2020, Germany created more relaxed Visa rules concerning people who want to work in Germany but are not European Nationals. Germany is a growing economy that has flourished in recent times.

German companies are always on the lookout for competent workers that are qualified and hungry enough to fulfill their demands. They want people who will work for them and take their organizations to new levels.

In Germany, there’s always a demand for skilled people that are not met. The changes in the Visa rules make it much easier for people from outside Europe to come and work for German organizations. It also gives the country of Germany access to an extensive range of qualified people.

The new Skilled Immigration Act identifies and entertains these issues by providing more accessible Visa rules. Jobs that were not available to non-EU nationals before are now made possible.

People can come from outside of Europe to look for work in Germany for as long as six months. Of course, if they find suitable employment, they can stay as long as they want to. You will have to speak and learn some German if you are to come to Germany.

Different types of Visas require different levels of German-speaking abilities. Here’s everything you need to know about the visa rules change for non-EU nationals

What changes does the law introduce?

Qualified Professionals:

  • Germany has introduced a new definition of Qualified Professionals that are allowed to come and work in the country.
  • According to the new German Visa rules, a Qualified Professional is somebody with either an education degree or a vocational education qualification.
  • You must take the vocational education qualification after taking a training course that had a duration of at least two years.
  • The German relevant authority must recognize your qualification for anything to go through regardless of you having a vocational diploma or an education degree.
  • passport

  • Before the German Skilled Immigration Act was implemented in early March of 2020, some rules prioritized the hiring of German nationals over people who came from abroad.
  • This act makes sure there is no prioritization of anybody over anybody except for the rules of merit. If a person is qualified enough for a job, they can get it regardless of their location or their passport.
  • Earlier, some Visa rules concerned the person’s range of employment that the person can apply for. That means if you were applying for a post in Germany, it must be relevant to your field of research or your degree.
  • Now non-EU people can apply for jobs that complement their field of study or their field of research. They can also take up jobs that are related to their professional field in any way at all. This is excellent news for all parties interested.
  • After the new German Visa rules, people with vocational qualifications can take up jobs that were previously only available for German or EU nationals. Allowing vocationally qualified people from outside Europe is a massive step in the direction of allowing more competent people from outside Europe to come and work in Germany.
  • If you are seeking jobs in Germany, the German Jobseeker Visa is a type of Visa that allows you to stay and look for jobs in Germany. The Jobseeker Visa will enable people to apply and interview for jobs. You can even work up to 10 hours a week for a potential employer to see if you are the right fit for the job or vice versa.
  • If you are an international student taking study courses in Germany, you can now request to get your Residence status changed. It’s easy and straightforward. Students from abroad will have to take up a vocational course to attain the Residence permit that will allow them to stay and work in the country. These students can also work while studying on this vocational course. This process helps in managing funds.
  • If you don’t have a recognizable education qualification for German authorities, you can now apply for a Visa for Training and Skill Development. You’ll have to acquire A2 level German Language skills.
  • Once you’ve attained the German language skills, you can apply for the Visa and develop skills to get your dream work in Germany. You can stay in the country for up to 18 months on this Visa, and there can be an extension of 4 months subject to relevant conditions.

Trainees and Students:

  • The first and foremost rule that would secure your chances of getting to Germany is having an educational qualification that the country recognizes. The German Education Authority must acknowledge and accept your educational degree.
  • If you feel like you don’t have enough skills for the right job, you can move to Germany on a Trainee Visa if you are younger than 25 years of age. You’ll also have to acquire at least B2 level German language skills.
  • Students who seek a Trainee Visa must produce a high school certificate proving that they have graduated from high school. Having enough funds to support themselves is a given. Study in Germany is highly valued.
  • International students who have finished their vocational training courses can request a permanent residency. They must first fulfill the condition of staying in Germany for at least two years before applying for a permanent settlement permit.

For Employers:

  • Organizations and companies can initiate a quicker process for qualified professionals. Employers activate this process at the relevant foreign registration office. This process helps in shortening down the administrative process and help the person involved in coming into the country and start working.
  • The first step is to hand the power of attorney to the company from a qualified professional.
  • If you are an employer, you must have a written agreement that includes you as an employer, the foreign registrar’s office.
This agreement includes the power of attorney and any obligations that are required.
  • employer visa

  • The conditional requirements include the employer, the qualified professional applying for the Visa and the relevant authorities.
  • Then they start the process. Firstly, the Foreign Registration Office tries to recognize the foreign qualification of the professional. After this, Federal Employment Agency approval is obtained. After the approval, the registration office seeks approval based on lawful conditions.
When all conditions are fulfilled, the office sends an advance proposal. The advance proposal works quicker than the standard procedure. The proposal, sent to the employer on behalf of the qualified professional, is sent to the professional.
  • The applicant must make an appointment at the German Missions office to apply for the Visa. German Missions will hold the meeting within three weeks, and the applicant must present the advance proposal in this meeting, among other documents required for the Visa application.
  • When the applicant completes the visa application and submits it, the authorities take three more weeks to make a decision. The authorities cover the qualified professional’s spouse and children in this expedited procedure.

I am a qualified professional. What do I have to do to work in Germany?

  • After the new German Visa rule changes, there are a few steps you must follow to work in Germany:
  • Get your qualifications from abroad recognized in Germany.
  • You need to speak some German in order to work in Germany. There are certain German Language levels you will have to pass to work in the country.
  • If you live outside Germany, you’ll need to apply through the German Missions office. They will help you in issuing your Visa. Find one near your location and apply.
  • Conclusion

Germany has been making waves when it comes to offering opportunities from non-EU nationals around the world. There are a lot of countries in the world where there are not enough jobs available.

Citizens of such countries cherish opportunities that pay good and offer a more than decent life alongside a respectable job.

Germany is one of the most student-friendly nations in the world, and now they are offering workers a good shot at life. It is an excellent opportunity for aspiring engineers, computer scientists, software engineers, laborers, and athletes.

The German Skilled Immigrant Act makes it incredibly easy and straightforward for Non-EU nationals around the globe to come to Germany and apply for their dream jobs without any discrimination.

If they are qualified enough, they’ll get the job. If you learn some German and have suitable qualifications, you should look into this.

How self-employed businesses are affected by Coronavirus in Germany?

The economic crisis triggered by the coronavirus is putting severe consequences on some sectors and the consequences can be devastating.

    Most affected are ones:

    • Self-employed or freelancers
    • Small businesses with less capital

Self-employed people, as well as small businesses, are the ones receiving most of the bad effects. Professionals like repairers, drivers, lawyers, musicians, photographers or artists fear for their future and do not see that the Government will protect their future.

Well in a state of emergency, people are always worried about their survival. In such conditions, it’s the state which helps the citizens to cope up with the situational problems and let them survive until the conditions get better.

Coronavirus affect on Germany Startup Jobs

    • Coronavirus in Germany: Businesses need aid

Due to the Coronavirus concern, not in a specific region but in the entire world people are worried about their financial future.

    Due to the

    • The lockdowns
    • Low trading
    • Unavailability of resources

Small businesses are unable to keep working for their survival. Small businesses and freelancers do not have such a capacity to compensate for their losses in the short term to keep moving in the market. However, at the same time, these small businesses and freelancers are contributing to each country’s economy. Therefore, these small businesses and the freelancers should get help in the form of aid to keep working during the Coronavirus issues.

Keeping the concern of Coronavirus in Germany in mind, Germany is the one which took initiative for these freelancers by providing them with the necessary aid to help them keep running their businesses and pay the utilities. In Germany and also across the globe the efforts of the German Government to help small businesses is appreciated.

    • Germany is leading

In Germany, the government is already finalizing a massive financial aid package to bail out individual freelancers and small businesses with up to 10 employees in Germany, badly affected by the coronavirus crisis, according to German media. This news is like an easy way out for those small businesses which are getting most of the bad effects of the Coronavirus.

The exact amount of aid that is going to be delivered to the citizens of Germany running their own small businesses and are not able to manage the finance in the presence of a pandemic is around 30 to 40 billion euros.

Specifically, the government plans to provide a total of € 40 billion for an aid purpose to help owners to stabilize their business.

    These would be divided into:

    • 10 billion as direct grants for one-person operations and small businesses.
    • Remaining 30 billion in the form of loans.

According to Economy Minister Peter Altmaier, he told Deutschlandfunk radio that the Executive intends to approve this plan next week to “help those who urgently need it.” While specifically mentioning those running small businesses in Germany to help build the economy.

The country’s Ministry of Economic Affairs has indicated that there should be no “solidarity gap” for small businesses and the self-employed. “The chain is as strong as the weakest link that is why we shake hands with everyone: the little ones and the big ones. After all, that is what characterizes our social market economy, and that is exactly what this crisis will make us survive, “he added.

    • Change in the country’s budget policy

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the economies are badly hit and no one knows how long it would take to wipe out Coronavirus from the world. Therefore, countries need to re-plan their budget policies to be able to fight against the current pandemic. Considering this as an appropriate act at the right time the German Government decided to revise its budget policy.

In addition, German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz wants to organize a special government fund that the self-employed can draw on for loans. This “solidarity fund” is currently being developed by experts from the Ministries of Finance and Economy and this will surely be a great financial help from the state to the citizens.

    • The program would mark the point where Germany departs from its policy of balanced annual federal budgets. After years of budget surpluses, the German government is no longer authorized to borrow money for the federal budget, so a special supplemental budget would be required.
    • The objective of this program is to distribute money quickly and with the least possible bureaucracy.
    • Germany’s plan for distribution seems to be effective as the small businesses have already suffered a lot to keep themselves in a market and to pay the utilities. Therefore, it’s good to provide them aid as early as possible.
    Germany Startup Jobs

    • Transparency to avoid decline of state economy

To keep the transparency, the government decided to come up with solid plans in order to make small businesses stronger as well as to maintain the country’s economy. The government wants to check later if the beneficiaries really needed that help. In case the help is not considered necessary, the money lent to the independent professional or the company could be converted into a loan. This would allow the government to guarantee that any money that has been distributed without justification is returned.

    • If individuals have taken money with a proper concern of aiding the business, it will be fine.
    • If the audit comes with no appropriate need for the money then it will be converted to the loan which surely helps back the state in terms of interests.
    Germany Startup Jobs

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s special coronavirus crisis cabinet is expected to discuss the measures Thursday afternoon. Germany is home to up to 5 million freelancers, many of whom have lost all their jobs in recent weeks. Quoting these statements of the Chancellor, we can know how much Germany is concerned about the freelancers and the freelancing market.

    • Last Verdict

As in many other countries, the freelancers are one of the major sources of drawing the money to the state. Keeping this thing in mind and giving it importance in regards to the country’s economy all the other states must have come forward to initiate such aids. Keeping the freelancing market alive is crucial during the pandemic but together and with the initiative of the governments like Germany has taken, the self-employed businesses will surely not shut down so quickly. Hopefully, the impacts of Coronavirus in Germany on the small businesses and freelancers can be alleviated with the help of the German financial rescue package.

The unemployment rate in Germany right now is a mere 3.6%. Compare that to the European Union’s overall unemployment rate of 7.6%, and it’s easy to see that Germany’s economy is booming.

    Worker’s Benefits

German employment laws are generally more favorable to workers, especially their termination protection, collective bargaining agreements, and holidays. German workers are entitled to paid maternity leave, often lasting more than a year. They are also entitled to sick pay for up to 6 weeks, with an additional 6 weeks available if necessary. Vacation pay in Germany is protected by law to be at least 4 weeks per year, which is leagues ahead of other nations around the world. And social security payments are mandatory by law as well. Germany’s worker benefits are substantial in regards to other countries. As an added perk, most rural sections of Germany have no speed limit. It’s not unsafe either, considering it was based on accident experience, congestion, and other factors.

    Working Hours And Ages

The working hours in Germany are particularly flexible. Most working hours are confined to Monday through Friday, with retail stores making exceptions for the weekends. Sundays are generally considered days off for everyone, with the only exceptions being bakeries and petrol stations. What differentiates Germany is that by the law, “Ladenschlussgesetz” (Shop Closing Law), stores have strict times they are allowed to be open and closed, meaning that very few employees are overworked or demanded to work overtime hours. German workers are known for working less but producing more.

In some parts of Germany, kids can start working at age 13, but that’s rare and only in situations with parental permission. The labor laws generally extend to children aged 15-18. What makes Germany’s youth labor laws progressive is that it forbids teenagers from working any jobs that can endanger their physical or mental health. And after any given shift, youths must be given a 12-hour break. They are also generally not allowed to work the weekends.

All in all, there are many reasons to consider moving to Germany for work. You’re bound to find a job with their low unemployment rate, the worker benefits are numerous, and working hours are flexible and forgiving. If you instead have ambitions to start your own business, there couldn’t be a better country to move to. Workers of all ages will find a welcoming and helpful community to start, grow, and retire in.

Finding the perfect job can take quite a bit of time and effort, and for many people, the process brings anxiety and stress, which can hinder their ability to “wow” a potential employer. These feelings can turn into defeat very easily, dwindling your motivation to land a great gig.

    Germany Startup Jobs

Fortunately, there are many simple things you can do to find the perfect job and make the process go smoothly. From doing research on the company so you’ll be informed during the interview to taking the time to practice potential questions you might encounter, there are several ways you can prepare that will help you reduce stress and anxiety at the same time. Get organized first by preparing a killer resume that highlights your accomplishments, and consider keeping a folder for all the information related to your job search. This way, you can put applications, business cards, and notes in the same spot for easy access.

    Get Organized

Staying organized is key when it comes to making sure you’re prepared. If you’re looking at several potential employers at once, it’s crucial to keep all the information related to each employer separate, as it can get confusing. Do some research on each company; find out how many employees they retain, how many offices they have, what their mission statement is, and what the position you’re applying for entails. This will help when it’s time for the interview.

    Germany Startup Jobs

    Hold a Mock Interview

Prepping for an interview is more than just making sure you have a stellar resume; it’s also important to have a leg up on the potential job interview questions they’re going to ask and to think about what your answers will be. This will prevent awkward pauses in the conversation and allow you to feel confident. Research industry terms, and find out what they mean and how they affect the company. With a little homework on your part, you can ensure that the interview sails smoothly.

    Always Be Professional

It’s always a good idea to look professional when you’re putting yourself out there for a job. Even if you’re only going into the business to get an application, wear appropriate clothing and be polite, because some employers like to do on-the-spot interviews to get a feel for how a candidate fits. First impressions matter quite a bit when you’re applying for a job. Also, it might help to look up some common lingo used in the workplace, especially if you’re just starting out or are going back into the job market after a hiatus.

    Get Familiar with Tech

Your Complete Guide to Acing Your Tech Interview (Part 4 After the Interview)

Now as the most difficult part of the tech interview is over, it time to look back and forth for the other things. The passing of the interview round must give a sigh of relief, but things are not over yet. You have still got a way to go before the final joining as the real struggle will start there on the field. So, just prepare yourself for it, analyse yourself from all perspectives and keep up your competitive verge.

    Coding & Onsite Interviews

If you are not selected for the job, then take pre-emptive steps to learn from your last interview’s experience and do the needful as per the current situation. Follow few of the after interview steps to make it a total win-win situation for you in both the cases. At times, following these simple steps will build your strong impression in the eyes of the interviewer.

    Assess yourself

It’s time that you recollect all the things you did to prepare for the interview. As everything is fresh in your mind, don’t let it go easily as this might help you to understand things in a better way. Write down all the points and start evaluating yourself on various grounds. Recollect those points where you went down in front of the judging panel, and also those in which you outperformed. Frame a picture in your mind for the company and its working practices along with the job responsibilities you have to undertake.

The next thing you have to do is to jot down the questions you were asked as this might help you in future and you won’t be facing the same issues solving them. If this was your first interview, then this written recap of the whole situation will help you time and again to prepare yourself in a better way.

    Write a Thank You Email

After you are back from the interview, try to write an email saying thanks for all their time. A Thank you email should be mailed within 24 hours as the whole situation will be fresh in the minds of the interviewers. If you delay the email, then the chances are that they might not remember your face. Mention a big thanks for the time and attention they have given you and considered you for the role.

This email will leave a perpetual impression on the mind of the evaluator. It will also create a different bond between you and the interviewer. It will give you a chance to clarify things in the later stage and you will be able to express interest in the position.

    Go for a Check-In Email

If you don’t receive a response from the Thank You email in a week’s time, drop in a follow-up email to see why there is a delay in the process. They also might be busy in deciding many things related to the whole process. This might take time as these final procedures are time-consuming, but dropping an email might give a positive impression of yours and keep you on the priority list. It will also show that you care about their reply and for the job position you have applied for.

    Coding & Onsite Interviews

Few candidates might think writing an email might show their desperate nature, but it is not true. Nobody is asking you to write back-to-back emails enquiring about everything. It’s just one or two follow up emails to know if it is worth waiting for the company’s answer. And these emails will definitely make you stand out from the rest of the candidates. One important point is this is that just don’t write plain emails enquiring about the final result, instead add up some useful things you were not able to cover up in the interview discussion or maybe a project you are working on that you hold back from during the interview.

    Feedback Email

If you receive an email mentioning that you have not been selected, don’t get disheartened. Despite, write an email by thanking them for the time they have given, asking them the reason for not getting selected. By asking the opinion, you will come to know your shortcoming, and won’t repeat in the next interview. Just remember that we all need practical disparagement and expressive feedback to grow in life. So, if you get the response on that, it will be beneficial for you only for the next time.

    Coding & Onsite Interviews

The whole purpose of sending a feedback interview is to get an edge in your next interview and keep you moving forward with more positive attitude.

    Final Verdict

Some might think that sending such emails might look like an odd affair from the company point of view, but in reality if you write meaningful emails, then it might turn the cards in your favour. You might also remain in the limelight because of these well-written emails from time to time. It is not that these emails will help you to secure the job position even if you are not the deserving candidate, but will instead get you the positive feedback regarding your performance in the interview so that you work on your weakness.

So, just follow these above steps and end the whole process with a positive note even if you are not selected. If selected, then it will be the best thing for you and you will get the joining letter in hand in just few days.

All the best for your interview. I hope you liked the suggestions. If you think that any other important point is missing, then do leave your message below. It will help other to improve their performance. Till then analyse yourself and work towards your goals.

Your Complete Guide to Acing Your Tech Interview (Part 3: The Coding & Onsite Interviews)

Well done! As now you have passed the Phone Screen Round, it’s time to get ready for the more intense session i.e. face-to-face interaction with the company heads. It is indeed the most nerve-wracking part of the tech interview. This is the final stage where you have to show your complete technical skills along with overall constructive body language. Here, in this round you have to show that you are a perfect contender with the best knowledge to succeed in the role. So let’s start with the steps to consider while cracking the Coding & Onsite Interviews.

    Coding & Onsite Interviews

Step 1: Preparation of the Coding Interview

    Swot technical ground rules

This part will be similar to your traditional interview where you have to roll-up your sleeves and start preparing from the basics irrespective of your experience and educational qualification. It is because this part will involve entire Computer Science exam rolled into one and you have to sit with that thick book to cram the detailed programming principles, algorithm, and data structure.

But the problem is that till the end you will have no idea as to which part is more important and which is less. So, to avoid this confusion and wasting your time on the heavy book and online tutorials, pay more attention to the expected and the most common topics usually asked in the coding interview:

    • Basic computer architecture concepts
    • Hash tables
    • Arrays
    • Recursions
    • Stacks/queues
    • Linked Lists
    • Stacks/Queues
    • Bit manipulation
    • Illustrious library functions
    • Heaps
    • Sorting Algorithms
    • Big O Notation

How to deal with the important topics

Comprehending what to study is not that difficult than how to study. When you actually sit down to study, you have to formulate plans on covering the important part of the topic. Merely looking at the topic will not serve the purpose here. You need to practice the particular diagram and understand the concepts behind it so that you can explain it in a better way.

In front of the judging panel, it sometimes becomes quite embarrassing when you know the answer, but don’t know how it was derived. For this, even if you don’t have a coding interview in near time, still you have to practice few problems on daily basis and boost your knowledge. You have to first read the problems carefully, derive the various codes for it, check the solutions and think of the other ways you could have solved the question.

You can also refer some websites for coding solutions like Codewars, HackerRanks, CareerCup, Interview Cake, etc. Books by experts also help in getting quick and elegant solutions to coding problems.

Pick a language for your interview

If the company has given you the option to choose a language, then it’s good for you. You can pick the one in which you have full command. You do have to keep in mind other things like the job position requirements and the company’s tech stack, etc. The safest part is to pick from the common languages like JAVAScript, C, C++, C#, Ruby, and not from those which are in trend. You can lose the winning game here if you choose something that you don’t know.

The interviewers will get impressed by the right solution you gave them and not the coolest language.

    Coding & Onsite Interviews

    Run-through the whiteboard skills

This is the most fearful and contentious part of any technical interview process. The candidate has to show off his coding and problem-solving abilities to the managers, engineers, and company heads. In this, you will be asked to write handwritten code for solving a difficult question along with full explanations to the related queries bowled by the panel every now and then. It is therefore, a long and time-consuming process.

If this is your first time, then do practice the same environment at home before the actual interview as many firms do ask to highlight coding solutions during the interview on the whiteboard. Buy a whiteboard and start writing solutions on it in clear handwriting instead of relying on keyboard or code editor.

Try Codementor, Gainlo, or interviewing.io to plan a simulated whiteboarding discussion with a real tech professional or even a hiring manager.

Get to know tech questions asked in interviews

Well, to be very frank there is no exact list of questions to be asked in the interview as no one knows the mind of the judging panel. It is kept as a surprise package for you. This is the exact reason why this round is little too terrifying. But the only option left for you is to search the internet and follow the footsteps of the experts of this field. What you can do is that you get acquainted with the company fellows during the first session. This will help you to get some idea from them for the interview.

For the whiteboard session, you can expect them to implement coordinated algorithms, binary tree balancing, check the interconnected lists, etc. For CS questions, they can ask anything related to the new technical terms, about objects, two or three tier architectures, etc. This is just a basic idea as the exact list will not be known till you sit in front of the judging panel. Just keep practicing various questions related to your field to boost your confidence level.

    Coding & Onsite Interviews

Step 2- During the Coding Roundtable

Clear your doubts if any by asking questions

Maybe that you know the exact answer to the question asked, but don’t show off too much excitement as this often tends to lose the whole game. Just be calm and first ask them the doubt or any clarifying question if any before starting the coding solution. This will give you time to frame your answer exactly they want and you will be able to recollect all your thoughts on that particular point.

It will give a positive impression on the judging panel and they will know that you are preparing for the best possible answer even after knowing the exact ready solution in your mind. The clarifying questions asked before diving into the answer will give you the idea of what type of answer they want for the questions put.

Get involved in answering the question

The judges sitting in front of you are not only waiting for the correct answer but also your clear and explained approach towards the solution. So, don’t jump into writing the codes after listening to the question as this will make them feel that you have already heard the question before from someone and have a ready answer to it.

Explain every step you are writing so that they also get engaged in the solution. This helps them to understand your answer in a better way. Someone might throw a clue or drive you away from the answer, but you have to face that also smartly and continue to go on with your explanation.

Ask for help when you get stuck

The technical interviews are planned in such a way so that the judging panel ascertains your ability in every aspect, and not only getting the perfect answer. The will assess you on your filed knowledge, coding skills, problem-solving skills, etc. So if you get stuck in the whole process, just realize it that it was supposed to occur. The judges are waiting to see your reaction to all the challenges they put you through.

Don’t lose your confidence and give tattered looks at this stage. Instead ask for clarifying questions and tell them that even if you don’t’ know the exact answer, you are going to try for it. If you don’t know even the basics of the topic discussed, then clearly tell them that you are not aware of it. It will not ruin your impression and they will try to frame another question. Remember, if you try to answer the question you don’t have an idea about, then you will sound stupid. In such cases being honest is the only way out.

In case you have little idea about the answer then you might ask for clues and involve the judges in your solution so that they can drive you thru the process. After all, getting cooperation from others is the main trait for any software developer.

    Final verdict

The technical rounds are always tricky and no one has clue about it. It entirely depends on your preparation and practice you do before the final day. The best suggestion from my side is that you start your routine healthy on that particular day. Get good sleep, don’t be too nervous or think too much about what’s going to happen next. Be calm, have a good breakfast, wear your best looks and revise everything you have planned for this big day in a brief. These small things also help a lot at the time of interview as your thinking ability is better when you take good rest, and your responsiveness is quick when you eat and sleep well.

For the interview session, you just have to be attentive to all the questions asked and frame your solutions accordingly. Try to break the answers into small segments and start coding by explaining everything stepwise so that everyone gets involved in your solution. If you get stuck somewhere then either, ask for hints instead of staring at the whiteboard like an absent-minded person.

Your Complete Guide to Acing Your Tech Interview (Part 2: The Phone Screen)

Now as you have shown your best-written talent on the resume and polished all your social and LinkedIn profiles, it time to get yourself for some real in-person experience. Though writing the perfect resume might be the first and the toughest job for a candidate, but handling back-to-back queries on phone screen round is little too tricky and nerve tricking. So, this post will give you the complete guide to acing your Tech Interview phone screen.

This round can be difficult for those who have excellent writing skills but low verbal skills. This happens with most of the new entrants. But don’t worry, we will give you tips to fight back that fear also. Just relax and take a deep breath and work on your weak points. You have to put in your extra efforts as the man on the other side of the phone will judge you at various levels before having the final round with the company chiefs.

For some, it might be ok to interact with the unknown person on the phone, but the pressure build in that session might bring down the confidence level. The interviewer might ask you anything related to personal life (not in-depth), professional skills, and past experiences. The toughest part is that you don’t know how to carry the conversation forward due to the absence of facial expressions and body language of the person on the phone.

There might be many such thoughts like that, but one has to face that also full-heartedly because the next and final stage might become easy if you crack this positively. The phone screen round is just to evaluate the person on a casual basis. It is to judge whether the information provided in the resume is true or not. But be ready with another technical part too instead of showing off only the soft skills. So, let’s go through the point to ace your tech interview phone round.

Keep all the resume points in your mind

During the phone screen round, it is very important to speak what you have mentioned in your resume. It is because the interviewer is going to first bombard you with the obvious question of your past job and educational qualification. Herein if you miss any of the points or say the opposite then you might be in trouble.

The best way to avoid these silly mistakes is to have the resume in front of your eyes if you are not good at remembering things. It is not that you have to read the resume when asked the related question but it will remind you of the bullet points so that you can elaborate and highlight your achievements beyond that. Also, prepare a brief one-minute speech about yourself with all the main points.

Just remember that the person on the other side has your resume in hand and he will try to shake your poise by putting up the easy part first with the twist. So, be ready and let them do their part. You just give a brief of everything asked with high nerves.

    Try to research the company

Every interrogator will ask you the same and obvious question of “why you chose us?” Now, this is what you have to nail it by having a prior information about the corporation. The HR person might think that you will just give the lame brief answer like other do, but here is where you can score big by having an apt and crisp knowledge. For this, you have to go thru company profile on various social channels and do a little R & D on Google.

But wait, this doesn’t mean that you are going to give a lecture on its past financial numbers or an in-depth lecture on company status. You just have to highlight company values and mission by tailoring them into proper answers. The engaging answer on company profile will give a positive impression and show that you are ready to spend your valuable time in developing the company in future.

Prepare yourself as per the job description

You very well know what the company is expecting out of the right candidate. So, start brushing up your skills as required. On the phone call, you have to highlight only those qualities of your which go as per the company norms. If the company job description demands the self-directed candidate, then you have to put forward only those projects where you have worked independently.

If a job demands a specific experience in C language, then prepare a narration related to that even if you have worked on it 2 to 3 years ago. Try to match yourself closely with the job profile so that they find you to be the right candidate. And if you don’t know something they desire, don’t hesitate to say that you don’t know that. You can’t be knowing anything and everything. but put that also affirmatively by saying that you are willing to learn that. it will prove that you are ready to learn and adapt to the new environment.

Get ready to answer the most common questions smartly

It is not only with the tough questions, but the simple and common ones also give a strong impression of your overall ability. From your personal details to the general tech related questions, all must be handled with full confidence and preparation. For this, you have to pre-rehearse for the questions and have a set narration possibly asked during the interview.

You must prepare the anecdotes related to your previous job experiences, your behaviour while handling situations, managing technical issues, or any other projects done outside this job.

Some of the important questions might be:

    • Why you choose our company to work for?
    • What qualities makes you better than others?
    • Reason for leaving the last job.
    • Your positives and negatives
    • What qualities will you prefer in your superiors?
    • Your future plans while doing your job.
    • Expected salary
    • Any new skills required recently.

Other considerations during the phone call:

You might not be knowing the exact time of the call, but you have to make some preparations before so that you don’t have to run here and there to collect things when you receive the company HR’s call.

    • First of all, keep your phone volume high so that you hear it wherever you are (if you re at home only).
    • If you are at office, then put a clear and short voicemail greeting mentioning the time you will get back to the interviewer.
    • Keep all the collected information ready in case you require it during the phone interview. This might be the company info, your pre-planned answers to tricky questions, work experience details, important achievements, etc. This will help you in framing the answers abruptly. So, keep these notes ready on a paper in front of you.
    • Find a place where you are going to have this important conversation as any sounds might distract you or the interviewer from listening to the questions and answers.
    • Make use of a noise cancelling headphones for dealing with technical coding session.
    • Answer all the questions clearly and with poise so that the listener understands in the first go. Using the word “Pardon” too frequently might lose his interest in the interview process.
    • All the technical questions put in front of you must be explained stepwise, so as to show that you have proper knowledge of the job you have applied for.
    • In the phone round you cannot see the interviewer, so it becomes necessary to know the response from the pitch of his spoken words. This is the biggest challenge in phone round because you cannot make out the interviewer’s thought process which you can thru body language in the face-to-face round. So, just make out from the way he puts up his questions and other general talks.
    • Try to have a better and comfortable position for your interview. If you feel more energetic by standing and taking up the interview, then fair enough, go ahead with that only. Some people find it more comfortable while sitting at one place and then handling the queries. Do whatever you feel right; the only important thing is your optimism while handling various types of questions.
    • Take time while answering the technical questions because it is better to be right than being wrong by answering hastily. And also be honest in your approach to every question. If you don’t know something say it clearly without worrying about the negative impression. It is always a wise decision to acknowledge when you don’t know something. Interviewers always appreciate this straight and honest attitude.

    Final thoughts

I hope you got all your queries answered, and this guide on acing your tech interview will surely help you to have the best discussion. The phone screen round might sound little challenging, but if you know your skills well, then whether you are on the camera or behind it won’t matter a lot. Your pertinent knowledge is all that works here, nothing else.

Please feel free to ask any other doubts you have related to your first interview.
